Here is the brief history of the Capuchin Order.
The Capuchin Franciscans are a Roman Catholic worldwide order of 12,000 men, both priests and lay brothers. We serve God’s people, especially the poor, in a variety of ministries depending on the needs of the people and the Church and keeping in mind the unique talents of each of the friars. Like our founder, St. Francis of Assisi, we strive to live in relationship with God, with those we are privileged to serve and with each other in peace, joy, and love.
The order arose in 1520 when Matteo da Bascio, an "Observant" Franciscan friar native to the Italian area of Marche, said he became inspired by God with the idea that the manner of life led by the Franciscans of his day was not the one which St. Francis had envisaged. He sought to return to the primitive way of life in solitude and penance as practiced by the founder of his order.
