In reading many other Catholic Forum and websites, I keep running across terms for different Catholic churches such as NO, SSPX, FSSP, ICKSP - and I have no idea what they mean. How do I know which my church is? How do I know if one's right and one's wrong? Or just which is better, if they're all OK? And does it matter? Thank you!

Joan,

Be careful. They are not Churches per se.

I don't know what NO means, unless they are referring to Novus Ordo which means the New Order of the Mass, which is the mainstream Roman Catholic liturgy in use since Vatican II and which you find in most Roman Catholic Churches.

SSPX (Society of Saint Pius X) is a sect that is in schism. They do not recognize the pope or Vatican II. Technically, they are not part of the Roman Catholic Church.

The following two are Priest Fraternities:

FSSP is "Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter". They have an indult (special permission) to use the the Tridentine or Traditional Latin Liturgy at Mass. They are Roman Catholic in good standing with the Vatican.

ICKSP is "Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest". It too follows the Traditional Tridentine Liturgy and is in good standing with the Vatican.

I would stick with parish churches that say RC in their title.(Roman Catholic). ex: St. Mary's RC Church.

Hope this helps,
Peace,
Rich

Thanks for the info Rich. I was wondering about those same things as well. Good to know.

God Bless
