Paul VI has never received the accolades he deserves, living in John Paul II's shadow. Paul was the man, who single handedly implemented the Vatican II changes in the face of the opposition from the Roman Curia, as well as ultimately reforming the curia itself by his sheer diplomatic will.

The Cardinal from Milan is often simply remembered for his modernization of the Vatican, but I hope history will show his true place as the first modern pope.

Paul was the man who made it OK to discuss and contemplate changes in the church -- while not changing core values and principles, his liberalization of thought opened up the concepts of social justice, and the actual implementation of the gospel and Jesus' message of service.

John Paul II is great, but Paul plowed the field John Paul planted and harvests.
