Ok... here is how this works. I will go first and give a short discription of a Saint and you guys try and guess who it is. The person who gets it right, gets to post the next Saint's discription and so on. Ready??

"I am the first canonized saint of the Americas. I was very beautiful, but because I wanted to be dedicated to Jesus entirely, I cut off my hair and ruined my complexion so that I would no longer be attractive. I worked tirelessly with the poor and obeyed my parents in everything except their wish that I marry. I am one of the patron saints of those ridiculed for their piety."

Hey, this is fun.

OK, folks. Name the saint who was a French priest, born in 1786. He totally flunked Latin many times and never made the grade, but was make a priest mainly because of his devotion. He was a simple man who was known for his mastery of confessions. He was offered larger and larger parishes, but stuck to his much smaller one... and really wanted, more than anything to join a monastery and live the rest of his life in solitude and prayer. Paton saint of parish priests and he was canonized in 1929.

Letitia,

No question mark about it.

Indeed, your answer of Saint John Mary Vianney is precisely correct. Congratulations are in order.

Now, it's your turn to pick a saint and give us hints.

Steve

Thanks, SteveT!

Hello, and welcome to tonight's episode of Name That Saint.

Tonight's saint was royally reared with daily teaching in religion. She was married when she was only 12 years old to a king with poor morals. She was abused by this adulterous husband all during her married life. Even with such a horrid man for a husband, she prayed heavily for his reform and conversion. (We might all follow her example!)

She was wrongly accused of taking the "wrong" side in a family dispute, but made working to make peace her priority and managed to reconcile the two feuding sides.

This saint's patronages include wrongfully accused people and peace.

P.S. thanks Christina for starting this game!!

No guesses for the Saint I posted about yet and it's been a couple of weeks. Shall I post additional clues about that Saint, or maybe pick a new mystery Saint?

My saint was a married woman with 3 children. She was also a physician. She died in 1962 to save her 4th baby.  A great pro life saint.  Canonized in 2004 by John Paul 2.

Thanks, Jim.

The next question is easy. She is the sister of St. Benedict. Who is she?

My saint (beatified) was shot in 1927 by government firing squad in Mexico
during the horrible persecutions of the Church.  His last words as they shot him were  VIVA CRISTO REY!"  LONG LIVE CHRIST THE KING!
He was a Jesuit priest and only 36 yrs old.

Correct answer, Deacon. Yes he is only beatified as I said in my clue.  We may need a ruling from you on this one, Deacon.  The game is called Guess That Saint.   If a person is beatified...... hasn't the church pronounced definitively that the person is in heaven.  And anyone in heaven is a saint, so.......... do blessed qualify for the game?  That's why we have you, Deacon - to answer the tough ones!!!!

Ok here is a saint:  I was martyred in Rome but wasn't from there.  I wrote 7 letters and I was the 1st writer to use the term Catholic to refer to the Church

An excellent attempt but wrong Sad.  He was a friend of St Polycarp and was bishop of Antioch.  Tradition has it the St. Peter himself appointed him as bishop of Antioch.   He probably also knew John the Apotle and along with Polycarp may have been the scribes for John.

I will be merciful.  This is an easy one, but I will do my best to avoid the most prominent details, and especially anything that can be easily searched!

He is believed to have been born of a wealthy family but renounced the family's wealth.  He considered himself married but not in the earthly sense.  He founded a religious order not named after him, but known by his name today, that is still in existence.  He met with many popes, and is believed to have been present at the death of one of them.  He was not a priest, but is believed to have been ordained a deacon.  He is linked in a special way to St. Damian.

His travels led him from Syria to Spain during his lifetime, and in his final years he was given a particular blessing shared with Padre Pio.  He is credited with popularizing the Nativity scene at Christmastime.

He described his testament as a "reminder, a warning, and an exhortation."  He was considered so important that on his final journey home, he was guarded to prevent anyone from kidnapping him so that his relics might belong to their city.  Before his death, he removed his clothing so that he would have no attachments to this world, and rejoiced that he had remained faithful to his "wife."  In his final moments it is said he prayed Psalm 141 and after reciting the final verse, his soul was carried away by a special sister.

On his feast day, special blessings are held throughout the world in his honor.  The practice continues even today.  He is also the patron saint of my diocese.
