I was wondering what everyone thought was the biggest change that came about because of Vatican II. I don't really know much about it and wanted to see what everyone's opinions are.

God Bless

David,

Just from the volume of discussions we have had in the chat room, I would have to say that the change from the Tridentine (Latin) Mass to the Novus Ordo. (New Order) of the Mass is the biggest change. A close second would be the change to the vernacular, and also the priest facing the people instead of facing the altar. (actually, the priest now faces the altar and the people.)  Those two would come in second I would say.

Just my guess.

I would agree with Rich and might add the increased activity of the laity in Church.

Hello, all. It's my first post here. Glad to be with fellow Catholics. About the question, the biggest change to come from Vatican II:

Change in expectation. People thought that the Pope would loosen the rule about artificial birth control. It didn't happen.

So they expected, and then made changes in other areas.

Since so many disagreed with the Church's position on birth control, but stayed in the church, authority became diminished. People found they could disagree, practice artificial birth control and stay Catholic. There began erosion, in my opinion.

In my view , the biggest change since Vatican II has been an increase in the active role of the laity. Before Vatican II the laity were very passive and went by blind obedience.  They believed the clergy was infalliable.  They are more active today in social justice issues, parish activities, evangelization etc.  It really wasn't a change but a spark to get us out of the pews and be "Christ" to others.  The calling in our Baptismal privilegdes ,,, we are  called to be a  Prophet, Priest and KIng... like Jesus

"All Christians—even married laypeople—are called to be saints, exhibiting love, truthfulness, and chastity. The kingdom of God is not confined only to priests, nuns, or monks. When, at the last, the Lord shall judge every individual, he will not hold it against him that he has not been a priest, nun, or a monk, but will reject each of the damned because he had not been a real Christian."

Wow - pretty radical statement from the 60s right?

Yes the 60's it is....the 1160's by Hugh of Lincoln
Bishop and Monk.
